Addiction

Addiction has many forms. Addiction can be influenced by biological, genetic, experiential, and trauma related events in your life. Additionally, the type of addiction can range from substance abuse, chemical or behavioral patterns, to severe compulsiveness. Regardless of the source and type of addiction you may be struggling with, there are clear and proven therapy methods that create the opportunity for healing and overcoming addiction.

Over the course of my career, I’ve witnessed clients come from many of the following challenges while struggling with addiction: inability to learn, impaired decision making, suicidal thoughts, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, relationship issues, physical pain, denial of problems, and many others. Addiction requires hard work, consistency, and accountability.

The first step in overcoming addiction is understanding addiction itself. Our brains are malleable, which means we are able to rewire our brain and change the ways we think. The truth around overcoming addiction is about developing new ways to wire and shape our brains in a way that has us being in control of our bodies as opposed to giving addiction all the power.

In my practice, we will help to identify and explore your personal story around addiction. I create personalized treatment plans that are rooted in allowing you to feel safe in your own body and mind. Additionally, I will support you in rewriting your story and developing a deeper understanding behind any emotionally charged thought patterns. Moving forward into the future, we will work together in shaping and discovering new meaning in your life.

In my professional experience, practicing mindfulness is a major cornerstone through overcoming addiction. Mindfulness allows us to understand our own body’s urges and behaviors so that we can become our own watchtowers. By noticing what comes up in our mind and our body’s felt sensations, we take the power back from addiction. Tapping into your full potential focusing on hope, resilience, and a more positive self image will be key.

Self-compassion, mindfulness, and self-awareness are all major themes in my practice of overcoming addiction. Even though one method does not work for all types of addiction, I know that healing is possible. We must change our habits whether that’s eating healthier, exercising, taking a yoga class, or finding a support group who values a safe space where there is no judgment.

Just like my therapy practice, you are allowed to feel any embodied emotions and work towards a path of healing.
